| History
Fortino, Plaxton, Moskal & Costanzo, P.C., had its genesis in the mind of Alfred J. Fortino, a 1940 University of Michigan law graduate. Al is the son of Italian immigrants and the first in his family’s history to attend college, which he was able to do at Alma College by virtue of the fact that the school owed his father money for produce purchased. Upon his graduation from Alma, Al was awarded a scholarship at Michigan where he earned his masters degree in economics. Al was then admitted to the law school, but was without the means to enroll. His future in the law was sealed, however, by his mother who had scrimped from her grocery allowance and was thus able to produce over $1,000.00 (in small bills!) which she had kept in a coffee can under her bed.
Al began practice in St.Louis, Michigan, but soon left to serve in Europe during World War II.. He returned to the practice in St.Louis after the war and continued there until 1959. In that year he formed a partnership with Ken Plaxton and relocated their offices to the Polasky block in downtown Alma. In 1962 John Moskal joined the firm, and in 1967 it relocated to Warwick Drive in Alma. Charles M. Fortino became associated with the firm in 1973 and became a partner in 1976. In 1990 Anthony G. Costanzo also became associated, and shortly thereafter became a partner.
Ken Plaxton and Al Fortino have retired from active practice, but remain of counsel to the firm. John Moskal retired in 1994, and passed away in 1997. Chuck Fortino and Tony Costanzo continue as principals of the firm, which relocated to newly renovated offices in the historic Church Block in downtown Alma in July, 2005.
Fortino, Plaxton, Moskal & Costanzo, P.C., has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with both public and private sector clients. It has, for example, served as counsel to the cities of Alma and St.Louis, and to Farmers State Bank of Breckenridge for over forty years. The firm is privileged to represent some of the largest employers in central Michigan, including Bear Truss and Components, the County of Gratiot, and Gratiot Medical Center. FPM&C has earned the respect of its peers, having earned the highest possible rating of AV from Martindale Hubbell. Today the firm serves its clients in the fields of estate planning, business organization, real estate transactions, employment law (including collective bargaining), agricultural law, riparian rights, insurance defense, and general civil and personal injury litigation.
